Finance Training

So I have departed from EC at Georgia Tech, even though I’m still the Ritual Advisor there, because I love Gamma Phi WAY too much to ever let go completely. As of last month, I have been added to EC at Brenau as, wait for it…. the Finance Advisor.

Try not to laugh too hard.

Alright. That’s enough.

It’s not that funny. It’s really tragic. I am not known for my money management skills. Thankfully, it’s not my money so it should be much easier to keep tabs on it. Or so I’m told.

Heaven help them.

With the new role as Finance Advisor came a fancy training session with the fancy Alpha Gam Finance Specialist. Who, by the way, it made of awesome. I heart her already. She is on top of things, she’s funny, approachable, knows what’s what, and best of all is crazy nice. My heart is no longer suffering from panic attacks because I know Betsy is an email away. And she won’t yell and me if I ask a really idiotic question. Which is really good news for my blood pressure issues.

Right. So. This fancy training with Fancy Betsy was held for all the Chapters she helps at, gulp, U(sic)GA. I died a little inside when I found out I had to go Athens. It’s the last thing any self respecting Georgia Tech fan wants to do. I wore my Buzz earrings in silent protest. Though I did leave my old gold car at home, opting to drive Bert’s more subdued blue one. I thought that would really be risking it to drive across enemy lines in Millie. And I don’t want to be That Fan.

Now. I will say that the Gamma Alpha Chapter House is historic. So there’s a redeeming quality.

And the sisters there are, rightfully so, very proud of their house.

During the lunch break, they took us on a quick tour.

AEM_1777.jpg

There were three of us with cameras and Jessica (the GA Tech Chapter Advisor) took the opportunity to ask about housing contacts and rules for Gamma Phi’s new chapter house. Which, by the way, has a foundation now!!

AEM_1779.jpg

Honesty compels me to say that the little goats and rams everywhere tickled me.

AEM_1781.jpg

But it was the original details that kept me wanting to take pictures.

AEM_1782.jpg

It’s the old parts than draw you in. Mu Chapter is older, or course, but we don’t have the old house to go with our old chapter. Which is sad. Our campus is old and we have history all around us, but we, as a chapter, have lost a since of age with all the “improvements.”

AEM_1783.jpg

When you don’t have the since of history, you can forget just what got you here.

AEM_1784.jpg

Buildings and antiques are like ancestors. They are important to know and be familiar with as part of your heritage.  By preserving the past your future growth will be built on a strong foundation.

AEM_1786.jpg

And no matter what the age of your chapter, you need a strong foundation.

AEM_1788.jpg

You can hang your pride on history.

AEM_1790.jpg

And build your own self worth with the positive elements you personally contribute to that foundation.

AEM_1798.jpg

Like these fantastic acorn cupcakes Betsy made. Adorable and delicious.

AEM_1801.jpg

Or be so awesome and thoughtful as to include a pronunciation guide on your name tag.

But it’s not just the big awesome things like being a 100 year old chaper (Mu will be 100 in 2014!) or having beautiful old chapter house, spectacular leadership skills, being smartest person in the room, or having a fancy pants job that make Alpha Gamma Delta what she is.

It’s all the tiny positive actions and results of individual sisters that add up to an extraordinary experience and vast opportunities to grow that make Alpha Gamma Delta my favorite place to be.

Even if it is at U(sic)GA.

Amazing

Here’s what I like.

AEM_3174

Drives lined with live oak trees.

AEM_3180

And views of the marshes.

AEM_3188

Cedar trees weathered by the salt.

AEM_3191

And Spanish Moss.

AEM_3198

And foundations of plantation homes built hundreds of years ago.

AEM_3199

And sunsets on the harbor.

AEM_3209

And ship rigging.

AEM_3214

And this house.

AEM_3098

But you knew that already.

One day, we will live here.

ONE. DAY.

Bonaventure

When I was younger, I had a cassette tape of ghost stories read by Kathryn Windham Tucker.

AEM_3129

I listened to that tape for hours.

AEM_3135

Mostly because Kathryn was the most amazing story teller.

AEM_3138

But she was also from Selma, Alabama. The same place my great grandmother was from, so their accents were almost the same. Listening to Kathryn was like listening to Gran Mother.

AEM_3144

Point is, one of the stories Kathryn told on that cassette tape was about Bonaventure.

AEM_3147

Bonaventure used to be a plantation. One night, while the family was hosting a dinner party, word was brought to the owner that the house was on fire.

AEM_3149

The owner had the tables moved to the lawn under the oak trees.

AEM_3151

And they continued to entertain their guests while their home burned.

AEM_3156

The fire warmed the guests and they danced and ate the night away.

AEM_3157

And now, if you are in Bonaventure late at night, you can still hear the music and the clinking of china.

AEM_3164

And even the voices and laughter of that 1700s dinner party fill the air.

AEM_3166

It certainly feels haunted. It feels like someone is with you all the time, just watching. Nothing malicious or scary of course. Just that someone is right there with you. I can see what authors come here for inspiration.

And just think. I have a personal connection with Bonaventure.

AEM_3114

These are the graves of my great great great uncle and aunt. And their son is buried an the left. My momma is named after them you know.

AEM_3124

They were remarkably easy to find. I just asked the caretaker to look them up and he told us the plot number.

I’m connected to history, y’all.
